“I understood at a very early age that in nature, I felt everything I should feel in church but never did. Walking in the woods, I felt in touch with the universe and with the spirit of the universe.”
—Alice Walker
FALL CLASSES NOW POSTED
I Walk Outside in the Woods
What spaces and places do YOU seek out?
Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve enjoyed the spacious quiet of the woods—the mysterious interiors, the soft mosses, the lofty trees. I’ve been a tree-hugger practically since birth! But each of us has our own special places (and spaces) that we go to for respite and pleasure. Perhaps you return each year to a special cabin on a lake? An aunt’s house where she serves homemade ice cream? A summer camp where you can reunite with old friends? These are the places and spaces of our hearts…and we plan to write about them this fall! We hope you’ll join us.
First classes start week of August 26!
First up, Mary Moore is offering her popular Writing Through Life’s Transitions class on August 27, and our Fall Sampler will be held on August 28. Class sizes are limited, so snag a seat in the circle soon!

ANTHOLOGY UPDATE
Editing In Process!
Our editing teams, including managing editor Jordy/n Bowen, consulting editor Marilyn Young, lead editors Anna Jacobson, Nancy Murrey-Settle, Sharon Scholl, and Kristen Kessler, our Flagler intern Annella Rizzuto, art editors Tatiana Kitchen and Deja Gee, and a number of our fabulous high school and college interns are busily at work.
Though Jordy has moved to Rhode Island after a successful fellowship at Yellow House, they will be handling the anthology from afar with ease.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO LATELY
Walking In the Woods
Along with my family, I’ve traversed the Allegheny, the Catskills, and Poconos mountains this summer, in search of birds and bluegrass…and found them. I hope you’ll find a little piece of that in these photos.—JW

“There’s a fence around your acre, though, with a gate, and if people keep coming onto your land and sliming it or trying to get you to do what they think is right, you get to ask them to leave. And they have to go, because this is your acre.” —from Bird by Bird
