“Whether it’s freedom to express, freedom to live, freedom to earn, freedom to thrive, freedom to learn, whatever it is, I want to make sure that I’m a part of these spaces and opening doors.”
—Angela Rye
FALL CLASSES NOW POSTED
We’ve Opened the Door. Do Come In!
Make sure you’re a part of these wide, open spaces.
This fall we will explore the spaces and places of our hearts. What has shaped you and your own particular world view? What are the landscapes of your heart and mind and body? Cosmically speaking…space is feminine. It’s generative. And it inspires us to ask: What’s next for us and the world as we know it?
In our fall classes, we will explore our past…the landscapes, the places, the spaces that defined us. We will explore our present: What is happening NOW in our world? And we’ll explore the future: what spaces and places do you long to see and explore? (Plan for a field trip or two as a part of the adventures this semester!).
We will also explore the music that flows throughout our journey. And of course.. the transitions that carry us through all these states of being. Not to mention…the spaces and places that make here—Jacksonville, Florida—a special and unique place to be.
The key question is…what are you intentionally making space for in your life right now—for you, or for others? Let’s explore that with pen and paper in hand. Our facilitators, Tru Leverette-Hall, Anna Jacobson, Mary Moore, Juli Williams, and myself, will be glad to hold that space for you.
Our writing this fall will be inspired by the art of our two Zora Neale Hurston Fellows and Artists-In-Residence, Teresa Cook and Emily Mitchell, as they explore their own ideas of “Spaces and Places” on their canvases. They will encourage us to do the same.
Your Future Is Written in the Stars

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO LATELY
Enjoying the Music of Bluegrass
Another pilgrimage I make every year is to upstate New York and the big bluegrass festival they hold there called Grey Fox. I love bluegrass because it’s democratic…anyone can learn to sing and play. However, since I began attending this festival several years ago,I have noticed a heavy emphasis on male artists. So I was overjoyed this year when the artists in residence were from the all-female group Della Mae, and many of the bands were led by women singers and songwriters like Molly Tuttle. Below is a small sample of two groups I particularly loved, and you might want to check out! And don’t forget to register for our own musical class this fall led by Anna Jacobson. You’ll love writing and listening to the women’s voices of our time. More info here.

FALL CLASSES : SPACES AND PLACES

The Last Word
Amanda Lynn Benway
“When I first started in Bluegrass, it felt like a boys’ club, and while that dynamic still exists to some extent, women are no longer just finding their place; we are standing as equals. The talented women playing today are paving the way for young girls, like my daughter, to pursue their passion without fighting past the stereotypes often associated with female musicians. Instead of being seen through the lens of ’just a girl playing and singing,’ I hope they will be recognized for the incredible talent they possess and the incredible artists they have the potential to become.”—Excerpt, Facebook post after Grey Fox
