i am running into a new year
and the old years blow back
like a wind
that i catch in my hair
like strong fingers like
all my old promises and
it will be hard to let go
of what i said to myself
about myself
when i was sixteen and
twenty-six and thirty-six
even thirty-six but
i am running into a new year
and i beg what i love and
i leave to forgive me

RUNNING INTO A NEW YEAR
Letting Go of the Past, Through Writing
Starting the new year with intention
Every year I re-read this poem, remembering all of my old promises and knowing it will be hard to let go of certain parts of myself, and certain parts of the year that just passed. But Lucille always encourages me to run on, to set my new intentions for the year, to forgive myself where I can, and, of, course, to learn what I need to learn.
It’s not easy. Of course, my journal (and books, and new accountability partners, and the wind) helps me do it. Not to mention the inspiring women I surround myself with who are part of our writing community! I always learn from them. In fact, check out the list below of “Books We’re Reading in 2021” to find out what words are inspiring them in 2021!
Spring classes filling up fast
Meanwhile, I hope you’ll consider joining us for our spring classes, inspired by the theme of our spring art exhibit,“Branches,” curated by Louise Freshman Brown.
We will be exploring the choices we’ve made, the art and words they’ve inspired, and the many “branches” of our complicated lives. I’m thinking right now, for example, of the word “thicket,” a word put in my head by one of our high school interns, Su Ertekin-Taner, who is working with us on a pilot program for high school students this year. Where are the thickets in your life?
Samplers are available to give you an idea of what to expect this spring, with more classes planned for March. We hope you’ll try us (or sign up again!). We want to run into the new year with you—and your writing. See you soon!
