“It is good people who make good places.”

EXHIBITION CLOSING
Spaces and Places of the Heart
An Afternoon with Our Zora Neale Hurston Fellows
Over the past two semesters, our community has been inspired by Spaces and Places, the gallery exhibit showcasing the evocative work of our Zora Neale Hurston Art Fellows, Teresa Cook and Emily Mitchell.
This Sunday afternoon, we invite you to join us for a special closing event—and a beautiful way to spend Mother’s Day. Teresa and Emily will unveil new works that offer a glimpse into their evolving artistic journeys, building toward a major exhibit at the Ritz Theatre this fall.
We’ll enjoy wine, cheese, and conversation as we reflect on the themes of the exhibit and celebrate the artists—along with their mentor, the incomparable Louise Freshman Brown.
It’s an afternoon of art, heart, and community, and we’d love to share it with you.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO LATELY
Public ReadAround Brings Tears, Joy
Writers gathered to enjoy the acoustics of intimacy
This past Sunday, our writing community gathered for a heartwarming and inspiring Public ReadAround, closing out our spring circles with beauty, honesty, and a few joyful tears. Held in the welcoming living room at 1610 Osceola Street, the afternoon was filled with stories, laughter, and the powerful presence of both seasoned and emerging voices.
We were especially moved by the words shared by our youngest writers, Nancy Kate and Sally, whose courage and creativity reminded us of the magic that happens when we speak our truth—no matter our age. We also held space for those who couldn’t attend in person but whose words resonated through the circle, including Mary Strickland and Deborah Reid.
Congratulations to superfans and Bookstore Crawl basket raffle winners Kendall and Lily, and heartfelt thanks to all who made the day so special. Just a few photos below; more on Instagram @womenwritingjax—take a look and enjoy!
We invite you to keep writing with us! Upcoming offerings include Anna’s Radical Revision Poetry Circle (starting in June). Explore all upcoming classes and events here.

The Last Word
“Every crisis, actual or impending, needs to be viewed as an opportunity to bring about profound changes in our society. Going beyond protest organizing, visionary organizing begins by creating images and stories of the future that help us imagine and create alternatives to the existing system.”
